First date ideas without alcohol

5 min read

Good alcohol-free first dates include a cafe or tea house, a walk with food after, a food market, mini golf or bowling, a museum and a dessert spot. If you don't drink, you don't need to explain: pick a place where it doesn't come up, or say "I'm skipping alcohol tonight" once and order something else. If she drinks, that's her call, and there's no pressure either way.

Why this comes up

Drinking is common on first dates, and plenty of people choose not to. Reasons vary: health, taste, medication, religion, recovery, driving, a clearer head, or simply not liking it.

Some numbers on how common that is. Gallup's July 2026 poll of 1,200 U.S. adults, run by telephone with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 points, found 54 percent say they drink alcohol, matching 2025 and the lowest reading in Gallup's trend dating back to 1939. Hinge's 2025 Gen Z D.A.T.E. report, as summarized on Hinge's site in December 2025, says 67 percent of Gen Z and 63 percent of millennials want romantic connections without relying on alcohol in the next year, and 43 percent of all daters have no preference about alcohol on a first date. Hinge's page doesn't give the sample size or method, and it's a survey run by a dating app, so don't read it as the whole population. The takeaway is modest. A date without alcohol is ordinary, and a good share of people don't mind or prefer it.

How to say you don't drink

Most of the time, you don't have to say anything. Order tea, soda, a mocktail or water, and move on. When it comes up, a short, relaxed line works:

"I'm not drinking tonight, but I'm happy to be here. What are you having?"

"I don't drink much, so I'm going to get a ginger beer. You go ahead."

You don't owe a reason on a first date. If she asks, you can answer or not. "It's just not my thing" is enough. If you want to explain, keep it to one sentence and change the subject. The same goes if you're the one hearing it. "Totally fine" is the whole reply, and don't ask a follow-up about why.

If you're inviting her, you can put it in the plan without making it an announcement: "Want to get dinner Friday? I know a great place with good non-alcoholic options." Or just suggest an activity where drinks aren't the point.

If she drinks and you don't

That's okay. Some people have a drink at dinner and others don't, and a date can go well either way. If she orders wine, don't comment on it, and don't sigh or joke about it. Let her order what she wants. Keep your own pace.

If she's the one who doesn't drink, don't pressure her or suggest "just one." Don't buy her a drink she didn't ask for. Buying her a drink covers etiquette, and drinking and dating goes through pacing for people who do drink.

If the only plan is a bar

Bars and breweries aren't off limits. Plenty of people go for the music, the games or the company and order something else. If you're nervous about it, meeting people at a bar sober has practical tips. If the place is too loud or too drinks-focused, you can suggest a switch: "Want to get some food somewhere quieter?"

Where Run Game fits

In Run Game, the forum's Where to go topic and city boards are places to ask what spots work for a date in your area, and the Dates topic is for trading what's worked.

What to do next

  1. Pick three ideas from the list that suit your city and your budget.
  2. Offer two of them in your invite, with a day and a time.
  3. Check menus for non-alcoholic options if the place has a bar.
  4. Write your line for "I'm not drinking tonight," and keep it to one sentence.
  5. Plan a time frame of about 60 to 90 minutes.
  6. Have a back-up spot within a short walk.
  7. If she drinks, let her, and order what you like without comment.
