Number or Instagram: which to ask for first

5 min read

Ask for her number if you want to make a plan soon and the conversation went well. Ask for her Instagram if the moment is casual or she seems unsure, since it's lighter to give. As a rule of thumb a number gets to a plan faster and Instagram is easier to let fade, but neither is right for everyone.

There's no study on which one leads to more dates. What follows is advice, plus the one useful fact: a lot of people your age use these apps, so asking for a handle isn't unusual.

Why this is even a question

Pew Research Center's 2026 social media fact sheet (5,511 U.S. adults surveyed from January 30 to June 18, 2026) reports that among adults 18 to 29, 79% use Instagram, 65% use TikTok and 56% use Snapchat. For many people in that range, an Instagram handle is as normal to share as a number. It also means plenty of people have a preference. Some feel a number is more personal. Some feel an account is less so. And some would rather not share either with a stranger.

That variety is the reason there's no rule. What you can do is understand the tradeoffs and read the situation.

The tradeoffs side by side

Phone number Instagram (or Snapchat)
How it feels to her More personal, more direct. A clear sign of interest Lighter, less committal. Easier to say yes to
Speed to a plan Fast. You can text a time and place Slower. Messages can sit unseen in DMs
Pressure Higher, for both of you Lower, for both of you
Visibility Private one-to-one She can see your profile, and you see hers
Chance of fading Moderate Higher. A follow or like can replace an actual plan
Ease of ignoring A text is harder to ignore A DM can be missed or sit in message requests
Learning about each other Only what she tells you Photos, interests and friends, which can help or mislead

A few notes on the table.

A number has a clear job. It's for setting up a time. If you want to meet this week, it's the faster path, and how to ask for a number covers the wording.

Instagram is a softer first step. For someone who isn't sure, "follow me and say hi" costs her less than handing over a number. The downside is that it often stalls. A follow, a few likes and a reply to a story can feel like progress without ever becoming a plan. What Instagram likes, story views and follows can tell you goes into how little those taps prove.

Profiles cut both ways. You'll each see an edited version of the other. It can give you something real to talk about. It can also give you a reason to over-read.

How to ask for either

For a number:

For Instagram:

Whichever you pick, say it plainly and give her an easy out: "No pressure if not." Then accept the answer. If she says she'd rather not share either, that's a no. Instagram DMs to her number has the follow-up: moving from the app to a number once the chat is going.

You can offer the choice

Asking "number or Instagram, whichever's easier?" is a fair middle path. It tells her you're not fixed on one and lets her pick her comfort level. If she picks Instagram, take it, and aim to turn it into a plan within a few messages. If you'd rather give yours, giving her your number covers what that changes.

After you have it

Whichever you get, the next step is the same: a short message that reminds her who you are and gives her something easy to answer, then a plan. How long to wait before texting covers the timing. What to text after getting a number has the lines. On Instagram, replying to her story is one natural way in.

What to do next

  1. Decide your default before you go out. Number if you want a date soon, Instagram if the setting is casual. Say it once in your head so you don't freeze.
  2. Try the choice line once this week: "Number or Instagram, whichever's easier for you?"
  3. Attach a plan to the ask. "Want to grab coffee Saturday?" gives her a reason that's bigger than the handle.
  4. Message within a day or two with a specific detail from the conversation and one easy question.
  5. Convert within about five messages. If you got an Instagram handle, move to a plan or a number by then. If she isn't responding, stop.
  6. Track what works. In Run Game, note in the session notes whether you got a number or a handle and how it turned out. Stats' outcome funnel (got number, texted, date set, went on a date, dating) shows where contacts turn into dates, so you can see which route has worked for you.
