What to text a girl after getting her number: exact texts

Updated 5 min read

What to text a girl after getting her number: something short that reminds her who you are, then a plan. The goal of texting a girl you just met is a time and a place. Not a pen pal. The fastest route is a short first text, one or two light exchanges, and a specific plan by about the fifth message.

Corey Wayne, author of How to Be a 3% Man, says the phone is for setting dates. His advice is to keep back-and-forth texting to a minimum before you meet and to use texts to lock in definite plans.

The timeline

When What to send
Before you part A name-and-callback text so she has your number
Same evening or next day A first real text that references the conversation
After 1 to 2 replies A plan with day, time, and place
Day of the date A one-line confirmation
3 to 4 days after silence One friendly follow-up, then stop

Text 1: before you part

If you can, send it before you walk away. Todd Valentine's daygame course describes the five minutes after the number swap as the most critical, so use some of that time on this text and on keeping the conversation warm.

"Hey, it's Sam from the bookstore. The guy who'd never heard of Ursula Le Guin."

Name, place, callback. If you couldn't send it on the spot, make this your first text later the same day.

Text 2: the first real text

There's no need to wait three days. Text when you'd naturally want to, usually the same evening or the next day. Reference something specific:

These are easy to answer and remind her why the conversation was fun. "Hey" and "how's your day?" are harder to answer with anything interesting.

Text 3 to 5: the plan

After one or two replies, name a day, a time, and a place.

"I'm free Thursday after work. Want to get tacos at El Primo around 7? Low-key, I promise."

If you don't know her schedule, offer two options:

"Would you want to get a drink this week? I'm around Wednesday or Thursday evening."

Two options are easier to answer than "whenever you're free." For ideas on where, see first date ideas that make a second date more likely.

The call-first option

Wayne's own script, from his writing on texting before a first meeting, is: "Hey, here's my number. Give me a call and let's chat for a bit and maybe meet up for a drink." The idea is to skip the long text thread and move to a short call. If she'd rather text, fine. In both cases the aim is the same, a plan.

How to text a girl you just met

Make it easy for her to reply. Your first messages should do three things: remind her who you are, point back to something you both laughed at, and move toward meeting. Skip anything that needs a long answer. Questions about her whole life belong on the date, and a flat "hey" gives her nothing to react to.

If texting starts to feel like pulling teeth, how to text a girl without being boring has more on keeping it lively. And if her replies shrink to a word or two, dry texter or not interested helps you read what's going on.

Keep texts short

Match her length. If she sends one line, send one line. Save stories for the date. Long messages early invite overthinking on both sides, and you'll use up good material before you're sitting across from each other. Keeping a conversation going works better in person.

The day-of text

"Still good for 7 tonight? I'll grab us a table."

That's all you need. Then arrive on time with your phone away.

If she goes quiet

Wait 3 to 4 days. Send one follow-up:

"Hey, no worries if life got busy. Offer stands for tacos sometime. If not, it was really nice meeting you."

If there's no reply, stop there. A reply to the follow-up is a good sign. Silence after it is your answer. See how to handle rejection for the next step.

If she replies but won't commit

"Maybe, things are kind of crazy this week" can mean exactly that, or a soft no. Hand the ball back once:

"No worries. Let me know when things calm down and we'll grab that drink."

Then leave it with her.

Common mistakes and fixes

Mistake Fix
Waiting three days on purpose Text the same evening or next day
Sending "hey" Send a callback to something she said
Interviewing her by text ("What do you do? Siblings?") Save those questions for the date
Texting for two weeks without a plan Suggest a plan by the fifth message
"We should hang out sometime" "Thursday at 7, tacos at El Primo?"
Long paragraphs Match her length
Heavy flirting by text Keep it light until you've met again

A full example

Same day: You: "Hey, it's Dev from the coffee line. The one who ordered the wrong drink and drank it anyway."

Next day: You: "Did your presentation go okay? You seemed very ready to fight that slide deck." Them: "Haha it went fine. Survived." You: "Glad to hear it. Want to celebrate with a drink? I'm free Wednesday or Thursday around 7." Them: "Thursday works." You: "Great. How about The Owl on Main?" Them: "Perfect."

Five messages from you, and a date is set.

What to do next

  1. Draft your first text before your next outing. Fill in the blanks: your name, the place, one callback.
  2. When you get a number, send the text within 10 minutes.
  3. Send your first real text by the next evening. Reference one specific thing she said.
  4. Propose a plan by your third message, with a day, a time, and a place.
  5. If she goes quiet, send one follow-up after 3 to 4 days, then stop.
  6. In Run Game, log each approach as a success or a rejection, then check the Stats outcome funnel: got number, texted, date set. If most numbers stall at "texted," the first message or the plan is where to adjust.
