How sessions work in Run Game: grouping a night out

5 min read

A session in Run Game groups one outing, such as a Saturday night or a lunch-hour walk, into a single block with a start time, an end time, an optional name and optional notes. Every approach you log between the start and the end belongs to it. You start one with Start session at the top right of the Improve tab, and you review it afterwards in Stats under Session history.

Do you need a session?

No. You can log approaches on Improve any time without one. A session is for when you want an outing to be one thing you can look back at: how long you were out, how many approaches, what the split was, and what you thought at the end. Approaches logged outside a session still count in your totals and in Stats. They just aren't part of any session.

Starting one

  1. On Improve, tap Start session in the top right. That opens the session screen.
  2. A sheet titled "Start session" asks for a Name, which is optional and can be up to 100 characters. If it doesn't open by itself, tap Start session on the screen.
  3. Tap Start.

A short "going out" animation plays, and you can tap anywhere to skip it. Then the session screen comes up. Start your session while you still have signal, since starting talks to the server. If a session is already running on another phone, Run Game picks that one up instead of starting a second.

A name like "Saturday, downtown" or "campus, week 3" is easy to find later. If you skip the name, the history shows the day instead, and you can add a name when you end it.

While it's running

The session screen shows:

While a session runs, the button at the top right of Improve turns into the elapsed time. Tap it to come back to the session screen.

Logs you save with no signal count on this screen straight away, and the screen shows a line saying how many are waiting for signal. See using Run Game offline.

Ending one

Tap End session and a screen called "Last call." opens. It shows:

Notes are the place for what a single log can't hold: how you felt walking in, who you went with, what you skipped. Only Success and Rejected are logged, so if you walked past someone you wanted to talk to, you can write that in the session notes. What to write in an approach note has examples.

Press End session to finish. A confirmation reads "Saved: 3 approaches this session." and a Done button takes you back.

A session that has run past six hours is ended for you the next time the app checks, with the start time plus six hours as the end. If that happens, the saved screen says "Ended at 6 h". Start a new one if you're still out.

Share your night

Share your night makes a vertical image, 1080 by 1920 pixels, sized for a story. It shows the day, the start and end times, how long you were out, the approach count and the success and rejected split, plus rungame.org in small type. It doesn't include a place. You can share it from your phone's share sheet or save the image. It's optional.

Reviewing a session afterwards

Open Improve, tap Stats, and scroll to Session history. It loads your last 20 sessions and shows the newest five, with an All N sessions button for the rest. At the top it shows Sessions, Per session and Avg time. Each row shows its name (or the day), the time out, and the approaches and success rate. Tap one to open it:

These counts are Success and Rejected, the two outcomes that count as approaches.

A simple way to use them

What to do next

  1. Start your next outing as a named session. Tap Start session on Improve and type a short name.
  2. Log as usual with Success and Rejected.
  3. Use See approaches halfway through if you want a quick look at how the night is going.
  4. At Last call, write one or two lines of notes, including anything you hesitated on.
  5. Next day, open Session history in Stats and read it back.

The logging steps themselves are in how to log an approach in Run Game.
