The Run Game forum: topics, city boards and where to post

4 min read

The Run Game forum is split into communities: ten topic boards, such as Field reports, Openers and Texting, and 20 city boards, such as New York and Austin. You join the ones you care about, and your Following feed shows posts from them. When you post, you pick the one community that fits best, and that choice decides whose Following feed it shows up in.

The forum tab

The forum is the first tab. Near the top are two choices, Following and For you. Following shows posts from the communities you've joined. For you shows posts from every community, in the app's Recommended order. If you haven't joined anything yet, Following says "You're not in any communities yet" and offers a button to Go to For you. Someone browsing without an account sees everything and doesn't get the two tabs.

Under those are a Communities button, a bookmark for Saved posts, and a search icon. + Post sits in the top bar.

Tap Communities and a sheet lists every community with a line about what it's for. Each has a small + that turns into a check mark when you join. Tap the name instead to open that community's page.

The ten topics

Each topic has a name starting with f/ and a one-line description from the app:

Community What it's for
f/general Anything about meeting people in real life
f/fieldreports What happened when you went out: the approach, the outcome, the lesson
f/openers What to say first, and how it landed
f/texting From getting a number to setting the date
f/dates Planning them, going on them, and what comes after
f/mindset Confidence, approach anxiety, and staying consistent
f/style Clothes, grooming, and looking your best
f/wheretogo Where to meet people: places, events, and times that work
f/wins Celebrate what went right
f/videos Videos from the Scroll tab, shared to talk about

In the composer, most of these have their own hint in the writing box. Texting asks you to paste the conversation without names and say where you're stuck. Openers asks what you said, where, and how it landed. Where to go asks where it is, when it's good, and why. Field reports start from a four-line template: Where, What happened, What worked and What I'd do differently.

The city boards

There are 20 city boards: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, Phoenix, San Francisco, Seattle, San Diego, Denver, Austin, Las Vegas, Nashville, Portland and Minneapolis. Their descriptions read "Meet up and go out in" the city, "plans, spots, and people near you."

A city page shows its member count, the same + join mark, and a Plans in the city link that opens the Map at that spot, where live sessions and plans appear. Use them for local things: a night that's worth going to, a spot that's changed, a plan to go out. A list of every city is at f/cities, with the cities you've joined shown first.

Not seeing your city? At the bottom of Communities and f/cities there's Request a community. You give it a name and a short line about what people would post there, and it goes to the admins to review.

Which one to use

A rule of thumb: pick the community that matches the question, then a city board only when the answer depends on where you are.

Posting in one place is enough. The same post in three communities splits the replies and is harder for people to follow.

Sorting a community page

On a community page, a button under the header opens Sort and filter. You can sort by Recommended, New or Top. You can filter by who posted (Anyone, Friends or Me) and by when (Any time, This week or This month). The Forum tab itself always lists the Recommended order. Search works across all posts or inside the community you're in, and needs at least two letters.

Posting

+ Post opens the composer. Its top line, "Posting in", shows the community, and a tap lets you change it. You add a title of up to 120 characters and details of up to 5,000. You can add a poll with two to four options, up to four photos, and an @ mention, with your friends offered as suggestions. A Post | Story switch at the top lets you write a longer story instead. Once posted, a post can't be edited or deleted, so reread it before you hit Post. Asking a good question in the forum covers what to put in it.

Browsing needs no account. Posting, joining and saving need one.

What to do next

  1. Open Communities and join three: your city, f/fieldreports and one that matches what you're working on.
  2. Read For you for a few days before posting, to see what answers well.
  3. Search first for your question, using at least two letters.
  4. Write one field report after your next outing, in f/fieldreports.
  5. Check your city's plans link to see who else is going out near you. Finding someone to go out with explains the Map side.
  6. Request a community if you've got a topic that's missing.
