What to wear on a first date (for guys)

6 min read

The best first date outfit is the one that fits well, suits the place you're going, and lets you stop thinking about it by the time you sit down. That's the whole job. Clothes don't win the date, but a bad fit or the wrong level of dressy can quietly make you feel off for the first hour.

If you want the general wardrobe, start with what to wear when you go out. This is the first-date version: choose by venue, then check the fit.

Start with the venue

Ask where you're going before you ask what looks good. Aim for slightly dressier than the room. Not a lot. Just enough that it looks like you made a small effort.

Plan Dress level What works
Coffee or a walk Casual, a notch up Clean tee or a knit, dark jeans or chinos, clean sneakers
Dinner Smart casual Button-up or fine knit, dark trousers or jeans, leather shoes or boots
Bar or lounge Smart casual, darker Dark shirt or knit, dark jeans, boots, a jacket you can take off
Activity (mini golf, bowling, climbing, a hike) Practical first Comfortable pants, a shirt you can move in, shoes that can take it

If you don't know the place, look it up. Photos on a map listing tell you more than you'd think: tablecloths and candles mean dress up a step, plastic chairs and a chalkboard menu mean you can relax. And if you're really unsure, ask her. "Is this a jeans place or a nicer-shirt place?" is a normal question.

Fit comes first

A plain shirt that fits beats an expensive one that doesn't. Run this check in a mirror a few days ahead, not at 6:40 pm. These are rules of thumb, so adjust to the cut you like:

Tailors shorten sleeves and hems for a small fee. It's usually the cheapest change that shows.

Three simple outfits

Pick one and wear it before the date, even if it's only around the house, so you know it's comfortable.

1. The easy one (coffee, a walk, a casual lunch). A plain tee in white, gray or navy that fits through the chest. Dark jeans or chinos. Clean white or gray sneakers. Add an overshirt or a light jacket if it's cool. Nothing on your wrists but a watch, if you wear one.

2. The step up (dinner, a nicer cafe). A button-up in a solid color, or a fine-gauge knit like a merino crew neck, sleeves pushed to the forearm. Dark trousers or jeans without rips or heavy fading. Leather boots or low leather sneakers, with a belt that matches roughly. A blazer if you own one that fits. If you don't, skip it.

3. The evening one (a bar or lounge). A dark button-up or knit, open at the collar. Dark jeans. Boots. A jacket, so you have something to take off if the room gets warm and something to put on when you walk her to the station. Keep it to one accessory.

Colors are easy: navy, white, gray, black, olive, brown. Two neutrals and one accent is plenty.

Shoes and the small stuff

Shoes are the part people forget to check. They don't need to be new. They do need to be clean, with the laces straight and the soles not worn through. Wipe white sneakers with a damp cloth the day before. Give leather a quick brush.

Socks matter too. Wear ones that cover your ankle when you sit, and no holes. Wear the belt if your pants have loops.

Check your pockets for a mess. Phone, wallet, keys. That's it. A bulging pocket reads as untidy and makes you adjust it all night.

Grooming the day of

The grooming work is smaller than it sounds, and the grooming checklist has the full timeline. For a first date:

Don't get a haircut that day. Two to five days before is better, because fresh cuts look sharp at the edges.

Scent: light

Use a little. One or two sprays, on the chest or neck, and no more. She should only notice it when she hugs you or leans in. If you can't smell it after 20 minutes, that doesn't mean it's gone. You've just stopped noticing it. Antiperspirant on clean, dry skin matters more than cologne. If you're not sure about your fragrance, wear none.

What to skip

Weather fixes

Cold. Wear a coat that fits over your outfit, and plan where you'll hang it. Layer a knit under it. A scarf is fine if you'd wear one anyway.

Hot. A thin cotton shirt in white, navy or olive, and lighter pants. Light gray shows sweat easily, so skip it. Keep a tissue in your pocket for your forehead.

Rain. Dark shoes you don't mind getting wet, a jacket with a hood, and a small umbrella. Leave the white sneakers at home. Arrive a few minutes early so you can dry off.

What to do next

  1. Find out the venue and its dress level the day before. If you're unsure, ask her one question or look at photos of the place.
  2. Pick one of the three outfits and try it on two days before. Do the sit-down test and the mirror check, and fix one fit problem, like a hem.
  3. Clean your shoes the night before. Brush or wipe them, and check the laces.
  4. Lay out everything the night before: top, bottoms, socks, belt, jacket. Don't change in the last hour.
  5. Do your grooming on the day, in the same order each time, and finish 30 minutes before you leave. Use one or two sprays of fragrance, or none.
  6. Pack your pockets with phone, wallet, keys and a mint, and nothing else.
  7. Read how to calm first date nerves and pick your plan from first date ideas so you're sure of the place before you choose the outfit.

If you keep session notes in Run Game, add a line about what you wore. After a few outings you'll see which outfit made you forget about your clothes.
